Tattoo Aftercare: The Most Common Mistakes (And How to Avoid Them)

Your artist put their best work into your tattoo. What happens over the next few weeks determines how it looks for the rest of your life. At Born Again Tattoo in Columbia, SC, we’ve seen beautiful tattoos fade, blur, and lose vibrancy because of easily avoidable aftercare mistakes. Here’s what not to do — and what to do instead.

Mistake #1: Removing the Wrap Too Soon

Your artist wrapped your tattoo for a reason. That wrap protects a fresh wound from bacteria, friction, and contamination. Leave it on for the time your artist specified — typically 2–24 hours for traditional wrap, or up to several days for breathable film wraps like Saniderm or Tegaderm. Removing it early exposes your tattoo to infection risk during its most vulnerable window.

Mistake #2: Over-Washing

You want to keep the area clean, but scrubbing it multiple times a day strips the protective layer your skin is trying to build. Wash gently with a mild, fragrance-free soap once or twice a day. Pat dry — never rub.

Mistake #3: Using the Wrong Products

Avoid petroleum-based products like Vaseline, which can pull ink and clog pores. Skip heavily fragranced lotions that can irritate healing skin. Your artist will recommend a specific aftercare product — stick to it. Popular safe options include Aquaphor (thin layer only), Lubriderm fragrance-free, or artist-recommended tattoo balms.

Mistake #4: Picking or Scratching the Peeling Skin

Peeling is a completely normal part of healing. Underneath that peeling skin, your tattoo is just fine — if you leave it alone. Picking or scratching pulls ink out with the skin, leaving gaps, light patches, and uneven color. If itching is unbearable, tap gently rather than scratch.

Mistake #5: Sun Exposure

UV rays are a tattoo’s worst enemy, especially during healing. A fresh tattoo exposed to direct sunlight can fade dramatically and heal unevenly. Keep it covered outdoors for the first 2–4 weeks. After it’s fully healed, SPF 50+ sunscreen every time you’re in the sun will protect your investment for years.

Mistake #6: Swimming or Soaking

Pools, hot tubs, lakes, and the ocean are off-limits during the healing period — typically 2–4 weeks. Soaking a fresh tattoo introduces bacteria, strips ink, and dramatically increases infection risk. Showers are fine; submersion is not.

Mistake #7: Wearing Tight Clothing Over the Tattoo

Friction is the enemy of healing ink. Tight waistbands, bra straps, tight sleeves — anything that rubs on a fresh tattoo can cause irritation, fading, and uneven healing. Wear loose, breathable clothing over fresh ink whenever possible.

Mistake #8: Skipping Moisturizer

Dry, cracked healing skin doesn’t hold ink well. Once the initial wash-and-wrap phase is done, apply a thin layer of unscented moisturizer 2–3 times per day. “Thin layer” is key — smothering the tattoo in thick lotion traps moisture and can cause problems too.

Mistake #9: Judging the Healed Result Too Early

At 2–3 weeks, your tattoo may look cloudy, faded, or uneven. This is completely normal — the outer layer has healed but the deeper layers are still settling. Wait the full 2–3 months before evaluating whether a touch-up is needed.
