First Tattoo? Everything You Need to Know Before Your Appointment

Getting your first tattoo is one of the most exciting decisions you can make. It’s also permanent — which means a little preparation goes a long way. At Born Again Tattoo in Columbia, SC, we work with first-timers every week. Here’s what separates a great experience from a stressful one.

1. Choose a Design You’ll Love for Life

The biggest mistake first-timers make is rushing the design. Before your appointment, ask yourself: will I still love this in 10, 20, or 30 years? Great starting points include meaningful symbols, quotes, nature elements, or portraits of people you love. Our artists at Born Again Tattoo specialize in custom work — if you have a rough idea, we can help develop it into something truly personal.

2. Pick the Right Placement

Placement affects the look, pain level, and longevity of your tattoo. Fleshier areas like the upper arm, thigh, and calf tend to hurt less and heal well. Bony spots like the ribs, spine, or hands are more painful and may need touch-ups over time. Talk to your artist about what works best for your specific design.

3. Eat a Full Meal Beforehand

This matters more than you’d expect. Getting tattooed on an empty stomach can cause lightheadedness, nausea, or even fainting — especially during longer sessions. Eat a solid meal 1–2 hours before your appointment and bring a snack if your session runs over two hours.

4. Stay Hydrated and Skip the Alcohol

Well-hydrated skin takes ink better and heals faster. Drink plenty of water in the days before your appointment and avoid alcohol for at least 24 hours prior. Alcohol thins your blood, which causes excess bleeding and affects how ink settles in the skin.

5. Wear Clothing That Gives Easy Access

Dress for the placement. Upper arm tattoo? Wear a sleeveless shirt or something that rolls up easily. Back piece? A loose button-down works well. You may be in the same position for a while — comfort matters too.

6. Understand What Healing Looks Like

Fresh tattoos are open wounds. You’ll leave with the area wrapped, and the first few days involve peeling, itching, and mild redness — all normal. Surface healing takes 2–3 weeks; deeper skin layers can take up to 3 months to fully heal. Follow your artist’s aftercare instructions exactly. They’re not optional suggestions.

7. Budget for Quality

Quality tattoos aren’t cheap — and cheap tattoos aren’t quality. A small, simple piece may start around $100–$150; larger custom work is priced by the hour. Never choose a tattoo artist based on price alone. This is permanent art on your body.

8. Ask Every Question You Have

There are no dumb questions when it’s your first time. Our artists are here to make you comfortable. Ask about pain, healing, design changes, session length — whatever’s on your mind. We want you walking out thrilled.
